Seven Day Summary: Crowds Log On to ‘Social Network’

Photo & Article, Ray Subers, BoxOfficeMojo.com

“While it may not exactly have lived up to the hype, The Social Network easily topped the box office in its first week. Less than $130,000 separated holdovers Wall Street: Money Never SleepsLegend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and The Town, while Case 39 and Let Me In failed to scare up much cash. Overall business was off about ten percent from last year, when Zombieland led with $32.8 million.”

“The Social Network earned $30.6 million at 2,771 locations. This was less than The Town but above Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps among recent adult-oriented movies. It’s also easily the best start for an Aaron Sorkin movie, though it lagged behind director David Fincher‘s Panic Room and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”

“Wall Street 2 moved from third place over the weekend in to second place for the week, down 49 percent to $13.3 million. This brought its 14-day total to just over $39 million, and it’s now set to pass predecessor Wall Street‘s $43.8 million in the next few days (though it still has a long way to go to match Wall Street in attendance).”

“Legend of the Guardians dipped a light 31 percent to $13.2 million. Thanks to its weak opening last week, though, its total now sits at an underwhelming $32.4 million.”

“The Town eased 38 percent to $13.1 million. While it finished in fourth place on the week, it held second place Monday through Thursday. Through its third week, Ben Affleck‘s Boston-set crime drama has earned $67.4 million.”

Easy A
continued its solid run, falling 36 percent to $8.5 million. This brought the Emma Stone comedy’s three-week total to $43.9 million.”

“Case 39
and Let Me In were major disappointments, finishing in seventh and eighth place, respectively. Case 39 had the slight advantage, earning $6.97 million to Let Me In‘s $6.7 million.”

Interview: Barry Sandrew from Legend 3D on 2D to 3D Conversion

Photo & Article, StereoPictures.de

“The 2D to 3D conversion of videos and movies is still getting mostly bad publicity due to not so good examples of projects that were rushed too much, or were done on the cheap, however when properly made, using enough resources and expertise, and taken the right amount of time needed, the final result might actually be really good and hardly distinguishable from a material shot in 3D. The recent announcements about upcoming 2D to 3D conversions of very popular older, but cult movies like Titanic and the Star Wars saga has yet again led to a lot of controversy regarding the conversion process. But I had the chance to do a short interview with an expert in the filed of 2D to 3D conversions, getting his opinion on some key subjects that a lot of people are interested in. I’m talking about Barry Sandrew who is the Founder, President, and COO of Legend3D – one of the top companies specialized in 2D to 3D conversion…”

Barry, please briefly introduce yourself to the readers of the 3D Vision Blog.

“My career began evolving in the entertainment business in 1986, when I invented the first digital process for colorization. Prior to that, I served as a staff neuroscientist at Harvard Medical School. I’ve been involved in the film and television industry for more than 23 years and am responsible for more than 14 VFX patents. In 2005, I founded Legend3D, a dynamic digital media and visual effects company that utilizes a patented 2D-to-3D conversion technology. This technology was recently used to complete the 3D conversion for the most complex portions of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland as well as three films for DreamWorks, and continues to be an access point for filmmakers, studios, and library holders across the globe.”

Please provide a short overview of Legend3D – how did you start the company and what does it specialize in?

“In 2005, I merged my expertise in graphic arts, image processing and neurophysiology to develop Legend3D’s patented 2D-to-3D conversion process, along with my associate, Greg Passmore. We advanced the colorization technology I created in 1986, and developed a proprietary process that combines technology and artistry to convert films from 2D to 3D. Today, my patented 3D technology has established Legend3D as a leader in the stereo conversion industry.

At Legend3D, we specialize in enhancing filmmakers’ storytelling by deepening their connections with audiences through the highest quality 3D, whether they are converting movies, television, advertisements, or mobile content.”

You handled some of the conversion for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. What were you specifically involved with (i.e. what scenes?)

“Legend3D was responsible for converting the following scenes:
- The Mad Hatter’s sewing room
- Scene of Alice falling into the round room
- The Mad Hatter’s tea party
- Scene where Alice meets the Tweedles in the castle
- Majority of the castle scenes with the Queen of Hearts
- Part of the battle scene at the end
- The goodbye scene where Mad Hatter says goodbye
- The execution scene where the Queen of Hearts is watching the Mad Hatter get his head chopped off
- Much of the mushroom forest chases
- Scenes where Stayne and The Mad Hatter are fighting in the makeup room
- Other shots and scenes”

Zack Snyder Says “NO 3D” for ‘Sucker Punch’

Photo & Article, Ryan, ReelzChannel.com

“The one sticking point is Snyder, however, who admitted in July that he wasn’t sure about the conversion. Snyder’s other upcoming movie, the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole will be in 3-D, but Snyder told Encore that he’s decided against 3-D for Sucker Punch.”

“It’s a definitive no. Maybe it’s Guardians‘ fault a little bit, because I’ve seen what really awesome 3D looks like. We talked about it at first, but I’ve been kind of broken by Guardians to the point that I said “Guys, there’s no way that we can do something that’s remotely close to Guardians, let’s not every try.”

“Snyder admits that “there’s a gap in the marketplace for high-end, perfectly done 3-D”and says that Australian animation and VFX company Animal Logic did convert a sequence from Sucker Punch that included a sequence where Emily Browning “has to fight a dragon and steal its fire,” but it seems it wasn’t enough to convince Snyder to do a full conversion. Snyder is clearly impressed with the 3-D work done in Guardians.”

“Not to compare myself to anything else, but I feel like we’ve created a really amazing 3D experience. Everyone has kind of said that 3D is the next thing, but no one has delivered that experience except for Avatar. This might be a breath of fresh air.”

LOONEY TUNES FAVORITES ROAD RUNNER AND WILE E. COYOTE RESUME THE CHASE IN 3D SHORTS

“Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, two of the most popular Looney Tunes characters of all time, are returning to the big screen in three all-new animated 3D shorts. The studio will attach the cartoon shorts to three of its upcoming family features–all three features to be released this year in 3D. The first short will be seen with “Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore,” on July 30th; the second with “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” on September 24th; and the third with “Yogi Bear,” on December 17th. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution.”

“In the new cartoon shorts, each three minutes in length, Wile E. Coyote is as determined as ever to catch the elusive Road Runner, who continues to leave his hapless nemesis in the dust with a taunting “beep-beep.” However, bringing the classic characters into the 21st century, the resourceful Wile E. will now be employing an arsenal of state-of-the-art ACME gadgets to snag his quarry–with all of the action in stereographic 3D.”

“In making the announcement, Fellman said, “Audiences have always delighted in Wile E. Coyote’s dogged pursuit of the Road Runner, with hilarious, albeit predictable, results. We are thrilled to be presenting these characters for the first time in 3D, which will heighten the excitement and humor of the chase, not to mention the impact–at least for Wile E. We’re sure these three new adventures will entertain a new generation of fans while reminding us all why these two characters have been beloved for so long.”
